Dental Sealants

A sealant is a tooth-colored acrylic "coating" painted onto the surface of the tooth to prevent decay on the biting surfaces of your chewing teeth. This simple, but highly effective, procedure "seals" the deep grooves where decay is most likely to start. Sealants are mostly applied to permanent teeth once they erupt into the mouth.  When teeth erupt they have deep pits and fissures which are highly susceptible to cavities. Sealants help to decrease the chance a tooth will get a cavity.

Sealants are indicated for children but adults with a high predisposition for cavities are candidates for sealants as well.

The process of applying a sealant is quick and painless.  The material is painted on a dry clean tooth and then a special high intensity light is used to cure the material.  The entire process per tooth takes approximately 1-2 minutes. This procedure is an excellent way to prevent cavities.
